Chicago Landlord and Tenant Ordinance

In Chicago, the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO) outlines the legal rights and duties of landlords and tenants. Enacted in 1986 and revised over time, the RLTO aims to protect public health, safety, and welfare, and to encourage the maintenance and improvement of housing quality. The ordinance applies to most rental properties in Chicago, with exceptions for units in owner-occupied buildings with six units or fewer, most units in hotels, motels, rooming houses, dormitories, shelters, employee quarters, non-residential rental properties, and owner-occupied co-ops.

Cook County Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance

In January 2021, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved a new Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance (RTLO). This ordinance became effective on June 1, 2021. The complete ordinance is available at cook-county.legistar.com.

The Cook County RTLO grants rights to renters and protections to landlords for residents in suburban Cook County.

What areas do you serve?

With offices in Logan Square in Chicago and Schaumburg in the Northwest Suburbs, we service the central, near south, north and northwest sides of Chicago, as well as the north and northwest suburbs. Not sure if we service your area?

What types of properties do you manage?

Domain Property Management manages single-family homes, single condos, townhomes; and multi-family buildings with 2-30 units.

Do you manage condo associations?

Domain Property Management does not manage condo associations. However, if you are looking for a referral, contact us and we may be able to refer you to another property management company. 

Do you manage short-term or mid-term rentals like Airbnb?

Domain Property Management does not manage short-term rentals.

How does rent get collected and how do I get paid?

We collect rent directly from the tenants. Most tenants pay electronically via our Tenant Portal. Every month we will send you an Owner distribution payment via ACH direct deposit on the 15th of each month. If the 15th falls on a weekend or bank holiday, we will send the payment on the first business day before the 15th.
